Is it intended that the dingy is supposed to basically be invicible to cannonfire and ships or is this a bug? I was so scared to go out on the ocean with blackbeard ships all around my starter island but when I decided to venture out they basically couldn't stop me.

Probably, but honestly it probably needs to be nerfed, you can use the dingy to get near ships and then build around them, there is a video circulating around showing someone cheesing ships this way. It was probably done to prevent people at the start from being wrecked jumping to the first 1-2 islands.

well I waited for patrols to be on the other side of the island, but the easier solution might be that the starter island doesn't have spawns around it so that you can get to the island with your big boat on it... Or have the big boat always spawn on the main island, but I also like the fact you have to use the dingy at first so i'd prefer that the ship spawns be limited around the starter island. Just easier that way.
