Steam and Epic games crossplay

Hey everyone. Thought I'd ask here as I'm finding conflicting info. My bf has the game on steam. I can't buy it on steam but I can buy it on epic games. Will we be able to play together? When I search some places say yes others say no. Please advise 😁
