#Extremely High Temps Running Windrose

I noticed my Laptop running hot while playing Windrose, but never thought much of it.

Since then I've seen many posts online regarding extremely high temps while running the game, I decided to check for myself.

I was shocked too see my average CPU temp jumped from a 49C ambient temp to 100.5C temp within a matter of minutes.

Surely this isn't normal? I've gone and tested other games and they don't make my CPU start to boil like this - it's the only game I currently play that I've noticed these temps.

I play with every setting on Low/Lowest:

AMD (Ryzen™ 7) R7 6800H Processor
RTX 3070Ti(M) 8GB GDDR6
16GB DDR5 @ 4800MHz
M.2 SSD

I would really like to continue running the game without the continued risk of burning out my setup: is there any recommended steps to take other than cleaning out fans/re-seating heatsinks?

Thanks.

If that CPU runs above its TjMAX (of 95°C) then that's not a game problem, at that point either the power target is too high for given cooling capacity (which would be fault of the manufacturer, unless your BIOS can alter that value) or there's something wrong with the hardware or the fan intakes are being blocked (typically if you put the laptop on a soft resting place such as bed).

cleaning out fans/re-seating heatsinks?
In case you didn't do this yet, it is also a thing to check.

For anyone that comes across this thread and is interested, I ended up cleaning out my fans and resat my CPU & GPU thermal pads. I got a nice drop in ambient temps (roughly -5/-10C), however when I booted up the game, yet again, immediately my CPU Tdie reading shot to 100.5C before even loading into the game.

#

Since then, I have disabled processor performance boost mode via Windows 11 Power Options (you must add this optionality in via regedit - you can find this online), this has dramatically reduced my temps which without changing any other settings, sit around the 73C mark while playing the game after 1 hour.

#

For some reason with processor performance boost mode the temps literally immediately shot up to boiling point.

I can't say for sure whether the symptom arises from the game, my Laptop etc, but this has certainly fixed and brought my Laptop Tdie temp down from literal immediate boiling point.

Yes, any setting other than "disabled" will immediately spike the temp to 100.5C as soon as the game starts to load to the main menu (let alone when the game is loaded).

It's probably worth noting system day 1 of owning this machine it has had the following processor min & max state power management settings (the processor performance boost mode is "new" as of today"):

Honestly I didn't even know this exists to begin up till now and based on my Google-Fu, setting it as "Aggressive" leads to an out of spec behavior (boost regardless of TDP or the power budget).

So I wonder if your laptop OS just came with it pre-defined, which some OEMs do to cheat in benchmarks, and yea, for that level of power delivery you need to have adequate cooling to keep up, which means if you run CS2 or OW or similar non-taxing game, you'll see high boostclocks and no high temperatures but once you hit the CPU hard it gets limited by the cooling potential.

Nice find !

I see you know your Google-Fu well!

Yes aggressive was the default, I was hoping to find some middle-ground with the "efficient enabled " or "aggressive efficient" optionality, but as it stands for Windrose on my system, these other options are not feasible when keeping temps inside of acceptable operating parameters.

I'm interested to see how tweaking these settings would result with some other games/applications.

If Windrose wasn't so damn addictive I'm sure I would be able to find out 😂

For whatever it is worth to others reading this, I can say my PC does not run how at all. However from my own experience Laptops do not always make for good Gaming machines. Even my last PC with a smaller box would run a bit hot and always had to be cleaned out. I burned up one laptop in the past and will never buy another for gaming. From what I have learned if you do long term gaming they do not work out.
I only post this so that others do not read this and go out of control with false information about how Windrose will destroy your PC. Already have plenty of those going around.
Feel free to ignore this or not. I do not hold grudges with others despite what they think. I am here to help others as others have helped me. Too old for School Drama, out of school many decades now.

TL:DR: Ignore the troll

Just as a heads up for others, @keen hull was being rude and condescending to a fellow WR Discord member who committed the "crime" of asking for help in one of the player-help channels... I originally called out @keen hull to which 2/3 other people then backed me up and defended the poor soul he was verbally abusing for literally 0 reason.

It is more than likely why he is now joining this thread with completely offtopic , and for all intents and purposes, useless information regarding this topic under the pretence of trying to be "helpful" to get in the passive-aggressive "I only post this so that others do not read this and go out of control with false information about how Windrose will destroy your PC. Already have plenty of those going around" jab which as plain as day as it is, to be quite honest, pathetic...

I blocked him at the time, but unfortunately it seems I have picked up an adoring fan.

The topic has been opened and closed and yet you pull it out of necro with nonsense, yet talk about "misinformation" and "moving on."

Please take your own advice.

If I see you passively-aggressively stalking my interactions again on this Discord, I'm going to reach directly out to the mods regarding your continued behaviour. Please don't say you haven't been warned. You're lucky you weren't warned by a moderator the other day after your behaviour. I suggest you don't push it.
