#Lost whole character and save game

32 hrs into the game. Lots of fun lots of grinding. Went to log in after a long day at work. Game loads up. And boom character creation screen. My lvl 9 character is gone. All that hard work. Just made the 3rd boat and rigged it out. Whole world is gone too. Can still play my world on my paid server. But can't use anything. Map is unexplored like I'm starting over. Has anyone ran into this and been able to recover. Steam was the cause i feel but they were no help at all

Thanks for the report! This issue is caused in most cases either by playing with mods or by Steam Cloud corrupting the saves during sync. We're still working on a fix, but for now we implemented an auto backup feature to help to avoid losing progress.

An automatic save backup is created on game launch (both for client and dedicated server).
• The maximum number of backup files is limited to 30.
• Only saves from the current version are backed up.
• Backups are stored in the folder:
SaveProfiles/{steamid}_Backups
• When the file limit is exceeded, older backups are deleted (the 31st backup replaces the oldest one).

HOW TO RESTORE BACKUP
Go to:
• C:\Users%username%\AppData\Local\R5\Saved\SaveProfiles%your_Steam_ID%_Backups
• Select the latest backup (or any preferred one). Backups are named by date and time.
• Copy all contents from this folder (it should contain one folder + AccountDescription.json).
• Navigate to:
C:\Users%username%\AppData\Local\R5\Saved\SaveProfiles{your_Steam_ID}\RocksDB
• Paste the copied files there (replace existing files if prompted).

For a dedicated server, the process is the same as for a local game. The difference is that save files are located inside the server’s installation folder.

• Go to:
\R5\Saved\SaveProfiles\Default_Backups
• Find the relevant backup folder. Backups are named by date and time.
• Copy the required files (folder + AccountDescription.json) from the chosen backup folder.
• Paste them into the corresponding RocksDB folder of the active save, replacing files if needed.

I tried this without success yesterday. All of the backups either load in a level 1 or character creation. Or get stuck in the map screen with loading banner and go nowhere

Have you used any mods or mod management software at ANY point?

absolutly not have no idea how to do that

played the first 4 levels or so then bopught a server to play better with friends got that up and running and played on it with 1 friend for the next 20 hours or so

the server is still active and all my camp and equipement is there and my friend has no issues at all

i have played every day since launch besides the 19th i believe

the issue started the afternoon of the 20th

i played that morning no problem

the backup looks empty but i coppied it into the other folder like you said

im worried the steam backup overwrote it as i was logging in it popped up and said steam cant sync then it went away and loaded in straight to character ctreration

All the logs you've send are from 21st and 22nd, any idea where could previous logs be?

Try opening C:\Users\User\AppData\Local\R5\Saved\SaveProfiles\YOURNUMBERS\RocksDB\0.10.0\Accounts
and removing the folder B390F.....

that was a folder that was hidden for some reason

game is launched saw unreal splash screen now its sitting on loading screen

normally its only about 10 seconds from the unreal engine splash screen to the main menu its still on the loading screen with the map

Sorry, at this point Im afraid there is not much we can do to restore the character.
Make an archive of your current C:\Users\User\AppData\Local\R5\Saved
folder, and send here. We'll try to look into it, but I don't think well be able to fix it.

i can connect for sure just cant use anytrhing as i have to discover it all again wasnt sure if any of the files were saved server side as well

No, unfortunately server doesn't contain player saves.
