I was gifted the game on Steam, and attempts to run it lead only to my computer freezing outright and needing a hard reset.

The computer itself near as I can tell is more than powerful enough to run the game (i7 processor, nvidia rtx 4070 super card, 64gb ram, running windows 11), and I can manage other modern games without issue so I feel comfortable looking elsewhere beyond hardware.

I've checked the sparse and admittedly generic guides I've seen now via reddit/youtube/steam community for fixing this issue. I've uninstalled/reinstalled the game, I've verified the game's integrity, run in admin, disabled steam overlay/cloud save, disabled the fullscreen optimizations in the config, forced windowed mode, attempted to direct it to run in compatibility for windows 8 (didn't understand this one but hey was willing to give it a try), ensured I have updated directx, C++ redist files, graphics drivers, etc.

I genuinely don't know what else to try.

Throughout the attempts with varying combinations of those attempted 'fixes' one of two things would happen.

  1. Game window opens flat black, computer fans speed up for a few seconds, then the computer freezes and they slow down.
  2. Game would ask for permissions on launch (which were granted) before a black window would briefly flash up then close itself only to repeat by asking the same already granted permissions again, opening the window for a second before closing itself, repeat.

I truly do not know what else to do. If there's any ideas, please, by all means.

silly question, but are you plugged into the hdmi or the graphics card?

Honestly at this point there's no silly questions. My monitors are plugged into my graphics card, I believe. I can try moving one over to the motherboard's HDMI i suppose 🤔

i dont think that would help. i just know my friend was having a similar issue with another game and he had been plugged into the mb the entire time

The permission popup is caused either by trash AI "Smart App Control" blocking the game or by you adding "run as Admin" flag to the exe.

if you have an i7-13700K/14700K try using the Intel Extreme Tuning Utility and changing the Performance Core Ratio to 51x.

well I used it personally, was crashing on Ark Survival Ascended, works for me. also the post below was from another user who did the same for a different game. its all UE5 games with this processor is the issue.

if you do a search, you will see many people used it. either that or no UE5 games.

intel is the issue but seen when running ue5 games

The issue was confirmed to be global to the Raptor Lake family and is not triggered by UE5 specifically, not even by Oodle decompresison library.
This is not a UE5 problem.
