connecting to servers

My friend bought me this game today about 1-2hrs ago and i was able to load into a single player world and he had created a server that he was hosting and it wouldnt let me join he setup a password that still didnt work the first time i tried to laod into his server it took me through a tutorial and then took back to the home screen and it has continued to do that it also wont let me host a server it eventually takes me back to the home screen im from the us and my friend is from the canada if that matters
