Subject: 80h Progress Lost - Infinite Loading Screen (PC & ROG Ally X Sync Issue)

Hi developers!
I am writing to report a critical issue with the "infinite loading screen" that has completely locked me out of my 80-hour save file.
I’ve been a huge fan since the Demo (where I put in 282 hours) and I currently have 80 hours in Early Access. In the Demo, I managed to keep separate saves on my PC and handheld without issues, but now with Steam Cloud in Early Access, I’ve lost everything. I reached the Foothills (Zone 2) on Hard difficulty, with over 40 hours dedicated solely to grinding materials and reputation.
I’ve been playing on both my PC and my Asus ROG Ally X (2026 model). What hurts most is that I found an incredible, perfect location for a "mega project" base. Since 90% of the world is procedurally generated, I’m terrified I’ll never find a similar spot again in a 4th playthrough. This would be my 4th time starting over (counting Demo transitions), and I simply cannot bring myself to redo the starting quests and crew recruitment until I know my progress is 100% safe.
PC Technical Specifications (High-End Build):

  • Processor: AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D (8-Core) @ 4.20 GHz
  • Memory: 32.0 GB RAM (6000 MT/s)
  • Graphics Card: 16 GB VRAM GPU
  • OS: Windows 11 Pro (25H2)

Handheld Technical Specifications (Asus ROG Ally X):

  • Processor: AMD Ryzen™ AI Z2 Extreme
  • Memory: 24GB LPDDR5X-8000
  • Display: 7-inch FHD, 120Hz with VRR

My questions for the team:

  1. Is there any way to repair or convert my current save, or is it permanently lost due to the "infinite loading" bug?
  2. Since the world is random, can I at least recover the "world seed" or location data from my corrupted files?
  3. I can send you my save files and logs immediately to help you investigate if anything is salvageable.

Save stability must be Priority #1. I love the game—I've even shared screenshot collections of my bases—but without a reliable save system, the progress feels like a gamble.

Hello! Have you tried to get your saves from the backup?
The feature was introduced & rolled on Sunday iirc

Thanks for the report. As of now we have an issue with steam cloud sync corrupting saves and working on a fix. As a workaround we implemented the automatic backup system that creates copies of your save on every game launch.

Try restoring your save from the backup and avoid using steam cloud saves until we have a proper fix.

Yeah i tryed that but its not working.. only by completley deleting save profile file, disableing cloud save, then i can get to character creation, otherwisr its not working

What exactly is the issue - you hang on loading into main menu, or on loading into server / offline play you get stuck on endless loading?

Pc, 21.4.26. Around 00:40 in the morning i stoped playing

I tried playint then in the morning on handheld around 9:30.. then it startet with infi loading

I turned off pc jesturday befor sleep.. as i was about to rurn it of, i got pc massage that steam is still wotking.. ( not sure why) maby had sokething to do with a game save?

New char and coud create new world.. i exited the game, then try to replace game files, turn on steam cloud save back on but and tryed with off but it didnt work.m its always stuck on infi load

Your world is located in C:\Users\User\AppData\Local\R5\Saved\SaveProfiles\XXXXXXXXX\RocksDB\0.10.0\Worlds, you can move it from your old save separately from the corrupted character.

  1. Move your old corrupted SaveProfiles folder somewhere.
  2. Start the game, create a new character and start a solo offline game. Then exit the game.
  3. Find a subfolder Worlds in your old SaveProfiles. There will be folders with worlds inside (named with a bunch of letters and numbers). These are the worlds that you've created earlier.
  4. Move those random-letter-number folders to your C:\Users\User\AppData\Local\R5\Saved\SaveProfiles\XXXXXXXXX\RocksDB\0.10.0\Worlds (it should have only one freshly created world in it, and you add all your previous worlds back)
  5. Start the game and check if you see your old worlds now (with the new character)

If the world itself isn't corrupted, then yes.

Also, have you tried all the backups from your saveprofiles folder? Your ROG Ally should also have some, if you launched the game there at least once after the sunday update.

did you ever load in and it was like a pink exit button in the bottom left? i left my game loading for a while and got that result. all i did was load into my single player game on steam deck

I am also having this exact same issue. It's my character that's causing the issue, not my world. I know this because I shared my game files with a friend to test this. He can log into my world(from a newly fresh character he created), but when he tries loading into MY level 13 character, he just sits at the LOADING screen and nothing happens.

Which really sucks because leveling is tied behind quests, and even if I create a fresh character for my world, I won't have the quests/POIs to get to the level of my main.

i can confirm according to mapping tools that the steps did help, but i gotta grind to get the ketch back, and travel across the map to my old base south to see if any buildings persisted, i was building a mansion with items from my first save, 40 hours on a dedicated host server, then whatever else i had grinded for to build it

i think the poi's reset with characters. i brought my lvl 6 dude into a new world and the island i setted on already had the poi done, musta done it on the multiplayer server

yep, this fixed it, buildings persist. the only loss is the character and their items, time to grind til i can sail to the highland and get back to my mansion yippieeee

from my first save, built a little pier, then scrapped it for resources to build a base on a new save. atleast i dont have to replan the build

Yeah but now you have to start at level 1 which is unfortunate. I wouldn't mind it as much, but my character is lvl 13.

So far this only works if you've played the game on another device, but basically I took the files from steam deck (the saved games folder) threw em into Google drive, and put the folder from steam deck into the respective folder

For steam deck there's a specific path you have to go down, and you'll need to enable the option to show hidden folders. Idk how it'd work on the ROG Ally but it should be the same process

Path to find the savedprofiles folder on steam deck MUST BE IN DESKTOP MODE!!! (make sure to click on the 3 lines in the top left corner in the file explorer, also known as Dolphin and enable Show Hidden Files)

Copy the savedprofiles folder, and drag n drop it into Google drive (make sure to star the folder to make it easier to find), download the files from Google drive, it should come zipped. If you somehow don't have WinRAR or 7zip on your main pc get one of those programs. But after that point it's as simple as drag and dropping the savedprofiles folder where it belongs. Like in the steps above on how to restore the world. If you do this method it will save the character and the world.

I wanna apologize for hijacking the bug fix forum but, hey atleast there is now a method to fix the bug if you've launched the game on atleast 2 different devices. Love the game, it's digital pirate crack I swear to god

Glad it workd out for you but its not working for me.. i tried coping the world. When try to go in with new lvl 1 char, i can see my old world game and when i try to load it in it just stop loading and goes back to main menue again

We looked into your save, it has some weird characters and new worlds, I am assuming its from restoration attempts.

Do you have your original "Saved" folder? The one that you had at the time you've found out about corruption? If you have it - please make an archive and send it. If its exists on your second machine - that will do too.

I had a similar issue and it was related to having two different character files in my save folder from when i made a new toon on my pc.

Identifying which was my main toon and deleting the remaining save files fixed the issue for me

The only way i can get pass loading and get to main menue is by deleting completly save profile file and make new char

Thank you for looking into my files. I have a few follow-up questions and some feedback regarding the current state of the game:
Regarding my progress:

  1. Is it even worth playing right now? I really want to dive back in, but I'm terrified of losing another 80 hours.

2.Single device only? If I start over, do you recommend playing exclusively on a single device (my PC or my ROG Ally X) and keeping Steam Cloud disabled entirely for the time being? Think i would play only ally x cuz i can take it anywhere even tho its better to play on pc and its much faster better fps graphics and combat is better..

3.Timeline for a fix? I know it’s hard to give an exact date, but could you give me a rough hint on when a reliable fix for Steam Cloud syncing might be expected? Are we looking at a few days, several weeks, or even months?
Regarding Controller & Gameplay feedback:
4. Quick Build & Tool Wheel: What happened to the main Tool Wheel from the Demo? With the new controller mapping, we lost the quick-build button. Currently, having to press 'Start' and use the mouse cursor to reach Build Mode is very slow and clunky on handheld devices.
5. Cursor vs. Snap-to Selection: Would it be possible to completely remove the mouse cursor for controller users? An automatic selection system (snapping to icons) would be much faster and more intuitive than moving a slow cursor around the screen.
6. New Item - Fishing Net: It would be amazing to have a Fishing Net for the boat! It could be a specialized tool to scoop up large amounts of fish at once in certain locations, making sea gathering much more rewarding.
7. Storage Management (QoL): Could you add a button for automatic sorting of similar items into all available chests near a bonfire with a single click? Manually sorting resources after a long farm is very tedious, and a 'deposit similar' feature would be a huge time-saver.I love the game and I’m ready to start my 4th run if I have to, but I need to know the safest way to do it.

As of now we have 3 main suspected sources of save corruption

  • Using any kind of mods or even mod manager apps
  • Steam Cloud save sync (between devices and even on a single device)
  • In very rare cases - abrupt game closing (but it also might be connected to a following cloud sync)

We don't have an estimate on a save corruption fix, it seems to be very complicated. That's the reason we introduced automatic save backups, while we're working on a fix. It triggers on each game launch and helps to prevent losing too much progress. So far we don't have reports of re-corruption if the steam cloud is consistently off.

Is it worth to play or not - its up to you to deicide. ROG Ally isn't an officially supported platform so in case of technical problems it might be more difficult to troubleshoot and fix issues - we don't know all of its specifics.

As for your feedback and suggestions - its better to leave it through the in-game feedback option or keep it for now and post in a feedback discord section, when it becomes available again. We're keeping eye on all the feedback we find, but it will be difficult to find here in the future.

Generally just deleting the "Saved" folder should be enough. You can also do a fresh reinstall + file verification to make sure everything is all right.

Playing on PC with cloud saves turned off seems to be the safest option. You can also transfer your safe between your devices by copying the "Saved" folder yourself if you really need it.

But as of now I can not give you a 100% guarantee there won't be any problems. Auto backups should help reduce the progress loss in case of the issues and you can also do manual backups if you want.

I will uninstall game on both devices, delete everything in steam folder for windrose, in appdate i will delite r5 and set steam cloud on off befor instaing it again and will do same thing for both devices
