#High CPU temp - a solution

Quick Tip for i7-12700KF users (and other 12th/13th gen Intel CPUs) – Unreal Engine 5 games like Windrose
If you’re getting high CPU temps (80–95 °C+) in Windrose or similar UE5 titles, try undervolting your CPU.
I undervolted my i7-12700KF by just -0.050 V (negative voltage offset) and my temps dropped dramatically:
• Soulmask: from 90 °C+ → stable 60–65 °C
• Should work the same in Windrose
How to start safely:
• Set a small negative offset in BIOS (Adaptive Voltage + Offset)
• Begin with -0.050 V
• Test stability with Cinebench + gameplay
• Increase slowly in 0.010 V steps if stable (many chips go to -0.080 V or more)
Huge temp reduction with almost no performance loss. Especially useful in CPU-heavy UE5 games.
Highly recommended for 12700KF owners!

Additional note:
I’ve always had high CPU temperature issues with Unreal Engine 5 games, which is why I was avoiding Windrose at first. However, the game has been pulling me in like a magnet.
So I spent the last few days researching solutions and found undervolting. I tested it first with Soulmask and it worked amazingly well (temps dropped from 90 °C+ to 60–65 °C).
I just bought Windrose a few minutes ago and it’s currently downloading (will still take some time). As soon as the download is finished, I’ll test my setup in Windrose and update this post with the results.

If any technical experts or devs from the team see this, I’d really appreciate it if you could take a quick look at this undervolting solution and officially confirm that it’s an effective way to reduce high CPU temps in Windrose (and other UE5 titles).
Thanks in advance!

If you have a card that supports DLSS, setting like this also ease the load on your CPU and GPU

Update after 3 hours of Windrose:
I’ve now played Windrose for about three hours with the -0.050 V undervolt on my i7-12700KF.
The temperatures stayed excellent! Even in the dense jungle, during fights, and inside my very smoky camp (lots of smoke and particles haha), the CPU temperature stayed consistently between 60–65 °C.
Only during the very first loading screen it briefly spiked to 80 °C for about 5 seconds. After that it stayed cool the whole time.
I’ll keep updating this post once I reach sailing, ship combat and other areas of the map.

Update after 6.5 hours of Windrose:
I was out on the water, experienced stormy weather, explored mines, and traveled a lot.
CPU temperature stayed steady between 60-65°C.
Next update will come when I start doing sea battles.
So far everything is running perfectly!

glad to hear that sir!

Update after 14 hours of Windrose:
I was mostly busy with ship battles today. The temperature stayed mostly between 60-65°C. Only during ship battles against 3 enemy ships did it occasionally rise to 72°C. I think I can now recommend undervolting as the perfect solution. If situations with higher temperatures occur, I'll report them here. Otherwise, have fun!

Mine was running with temps around 60-65 but not it keeps getting to high 70s and I can't figure out why

cause the CPU was designed to run up to 100C with no problem...

Yes, that's correct. However, I (personally) believe that just because my car can go 280 km/h, I don't always have to full throttle. For me, it's simply a much more pleasant feeling when I can keep the temperature under control with such a simple step. Technically, I'm a noob. I simply understood that the U5 engine, in its design, unnecessarily triggers the "full throttle" of the CPU on some 12th and 13th generation CPUs. I thought I'd have to get a different CPU this year. But now I don't. 😉

I have my i5 11400 and it reaches 100% usage most of the time in game but I don't deal with high temperature.
With my CPU in 100% the temperature doesn't cross 63C

Went to 72 ish lol and CCD#0 goes up to 77 in menu but not ingame i use 9 5900x with radiator cooling im waiting for the armagedon to cool down more to upgrade board ram cpu and prob cooler maybe case

Quick update: After several hours, there were some small changes regarding temperature. About 70% of the time, the temperature stayed as mentioned in my previous updates. During the remaining time, it went up to a maximum of 75°C, often when many NPCs (goats, wolves, pirates) were nearby at the same time.

This has now changed again after the game update—and for the better. Since the update, the overall temperature has improved significantly. On average, it now sits around 55°C–60°C, and in NPC-heavy scenes it reaches a maximum of 69°C.

The game update was really good!
