The crew is so bored they start knitting and cleaning their toe nails. A messages says to get closer to the other ship, but the helm is blocked (won't let me control my ship). I know of no way to get out of this. Shouldn't there be grappling hooks to tie the two ships together?
I'm tired of entering alone and dying alone.

Thanks for the report! What is exactly the issue? Are you starting the boarding fight by pressing spacebar?

I honestly don't recall if I had pressed the spacebar already or not, but maybe I didn't, I'm not sure. When I left the wheel to go enter the other boat, I noticed that my crew was just standing around like on holiday. When I went back to the wheel to steer in closer, the game wouldn't let me take the wheel - some text about being in combat or something. I had to enter the enemy boat alone and jump back and forth to heal up and back to kill some more until I won, but it was a PITA.
Absolutely certain is that 1) the crew refused to enter the enemy boat, and 2) I could not take the wheel.

There are limited amount of sailors that will jump with you onto enemy ship in boarding. After some amount, your respawned sailors will just start cheering for you.
If you struggle a lot with boarding - try
- upgrading your boarding kit item
- upgrading your gear
- go into server options when you host a game, and scale down boarding difficulty
