Seeds don't proc Discovery

I have the big suspicion that the seeds don't properly proc discoveries.

Reason I believe that is that I found sweet potato seeds and pepper seeds that I can't use. But banana and bush work mighty fine.

Im in the same boat, chopped hundreds of palms but no palm seeds drop?? stuck at this point in the game now.
