During a naval battle near the Buccaneer's den on a server hosted by my friend, I got the loading screen. It didn't go out; after restarting the game, it comes back right after the Unreal logo.

Tried to restart the game, restart steam, restart the server, verify files (one file was bad, yet fixing it didn't help) and leaving the loading for a long time.
After coming back after an hour or so, the loading screen gave way to the attached screenshot. The pink Quit button is really scary. Help!

Hey! Thanks for your report, we'll look into it. Does your friend have similar problems, or is it just you?

For now I can suggest a solution that helped several other players with the similar problem:

  1. Close the game, turn off steam cloud saves in game setting on the games page in your steam library.
  2. Go to
    C:\Users\YOUR USERNAME\AppData\Local\R5\Saved
    Make a backup of this folder just in case, then delete it.
  3. Launch the game - it should ask you to create the new character. Do it.
  4. Close the game and enable steam cloud saves back.
  5. When Steam finds a conflict in save files, choose the Steam Cloud version.

The source of the problem seems to be Steam Cloud corrupting the save files, but these steps can help to save your progress.

Will the save file suffice? The folder with the long string of numbers? I cannot find a server save folder, yet I created a solo/offline one

BUG REPORTING GUIDE

Please share your (1) game logs, (2) saves, and (3) DxDiag — they are essential for diagnosing and fixing bugs.

(1) HOW TO FIND LOGS

Game logs are located here:

C:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\Local\R5\Saved\Logs

Server logs are located here:

R5\Builds\WindowsServer\R5\Saved\Logs

To get there, open Steam, find Windrose in your library, right-click it, then go to Manage → Browse local files. From there, archive the files in the Logs folder and share them with us.

Please name your logs in a way that describes the problem, for example: Crashedwhile_fighting_Dodo.log

(2) HOW TO FIND SAVES

Your saves are located here:

C:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\Local\R5\Saved\SaveProfiles
Please close the game before archiving your saves!

If you are playing on a dedicated server:

• Stop both the client and the dedicated server.
• Find and archive your server logs and world save.

Dedicated server logs are located here:

R5\Saved\Logs

Dedicated server saves are located here:

R5\Saved\SaveProfiles

To get there, open Steam, find Windrose Dedicated Server in your library, right-click it, then go to Manage → Browse local files (or go to the folder where your Windrose Dedicated Server is stored).

Please close the dedicated server before archiving your saves.

(3) Please also include your DxDiag report

This is your PC specifications in .txt format:

• Press Win + R.
• Type dxdiag and press Enter.
• When the tool opens, click Save All Information.
• Save the .txt file and attach it to your report.

If you mean what files to backup - just your "Saved" folder in C:\Users\YOUR USERNAME\AppData\Local\R5\

Oh, and also Steam logs can be very helpful if you don't mind sharing

But yeah, first step works - deleting the saves made the game start up normally. Now to try to reinject them somehow...

I have a particularly... Active friend. I know stuff takes time but I'm afraid if I wait another few days he will just win the game 🙃

We're still investigating what causes these random save corrupts, but we hope to include the fix in the nearest patch. As for now people who restarted with fresh saves and with the cloud turned off haven't reported new cases of save corrupt - but we don't have a 100% guarantee unfortunately. Only people's words "its all good now"

yeah well, I ran out of it right after posting this, so I just started a new character with no cloud saves and backups every playthrough. Hope you guys resolve the issue though, as I'm not sure if I have it in me to gather the crew for the fourth time (counting the demo) wr_skull
