so i really like the idea of Nilah like a girl with a water whip? thats crazy cool so i tried her out and shes pretty fun except im not really sure how to use her W effectively. How often should i use it? Should i use it when the enemy goes in for short trades like say a draven? how should i be using it?

This question is overthinking the ability a little bit. You should use it when you're best able to. Obviously defensively during an engage/counter engage is the most immediate case. But if your enemy laner is able to efficiently trade then, by all means, feel free to use it to negate those trades.

Cooldown is long but it’s not an ultimate so any value is good value imo. If you can choose between waiting 3 more seconds to bait a spell your W counters go for it, but if you can get decent value out of it by e.g. a short trade against an auto attack adc do it
It’s late game also nice if you want to catch up to people since it gives move speed but don’t randomly use it for that only when you know you can get a pick using the move speed and you don’t need it while fighting after

Casting it early to mitigate 1-2 autoattacks would not be beneficial especially considering the cooldown of it in early game. Your enemies would likely take advantage of the 20+ cd of your W and go heavy on their poke knowing that your W is down

I mean more that you don’t have to save it for just a specific thing and just have it available at all times cause it scared to not get value since it’s so strong
