there's multiple burn phases where you want to tunnel the boss as hard as possible, the lower he gets during those the easier that last burn is
if you really need botd for the synapses, you can, but it's usually not necessary

The hard damage check can be helped a bit. You dont want to push him to 25% before the portal to the extra phase shows up. If you push him to 25% before the portal, he will go immune. If you hold dps for a bit and then wait for the portal to appear you can get another ~10%-ish before going into the portal
