I think what really makes ToS "work" is that the categories are defined enough to give decent criteria for judging, but also vague enough to be left open to interpretation. and the 2.5 minute timer makes it so iffy mogs can still do OK, but great mogs really shine through.
maybe if they weighted votes based on the size of your party.
so if you queued with 4, the votes of the other 2 would hold more weight than the votes of those in the party. of course, that stinks for the party if they're actually willing to play fair.

It'd be a 2/10 cause it's ugly as sin, and you've got both two shades of orange and two shades of brown, all of which clash, but I'll give you a bonus point because your using fairly original pieces in a unique combination.

I think people are too afraid to use base pieces of a set for fear of looking unoriginal
but so long as you make it unique enough you can make a tier set work while being fresh
Plus, a big pitfall people run into when trying to make EVERY part of the mog different is they almost always clash
Because Blizz cycles shades like it's discount day at the paint chip store
Either pick a set you like the base of and use color matching to build up, or pick a piece you like a lot and work backwards to find pieces that fit with it
A good mog will start to fit together as you find shades and styles that match
I've linked this pice a few times, but it's a good example of what I'm talking about. I'm using 4 pieces of Tier here, but because I've shifted the style of the set dramatically, it still looks original, while also looking like it could be an actual set

My process for building this set was obviously the base Heroic Tier 21, which I'm a big fan of. But trying to shift it away from the bulky look that the finished set has.
So my first step was to throw out everything bulky. Meaning the helm/cloak/shoulders
So now I needed to find pieces that made the set unique. The first thing I noticed was that the gloves are off balanced. The left hand has a guard on it while the right is a bare glove
So I found a matching 1 shoulder piece to continue the shielded look of the left arm
Then I looked for any feet that matched the cloth underwrappings on the chest, the HFC monk boots were close so I looked through shades until I found the closest match
then I found a less flamboyant headpiece that matched the set
And added a larger cloak to give it a more heavy feel
So while I only changed 4 parts, the base set looks very different from the style of the Tier set
That's a helpful way to approach it

My #1 recommendation for simple mogs is to find a chest you like first, pair it with a shirt that gives the look more depth, and build off of that.
Another benefit to simpler mogs is you can use more shades and colors, as you don't have to match as many pieces
Pick a few primary colors (here I've used blood red/black/white) and look for pieces that reflect shades of these colors
then work through those pieces until you find a combination that works together in a uniform look

For what it's worth, I value originality over style when deciding if a mog is "Macky Approved" (Which is completely fucking meaningless btw).
What impresses me with mogs is when something unique is done that stands out against the endless waves of similar "meme sets".
I gave it to grogmans mog because he meshed a combination of colors (brown, white, green, and red) that I never would have thought could all work in one set in a way that made it look surprisingly good.
And I gave it to Odyssa because I already thought the mog was decent, but the fact that I didn't realize it wasnt a monk was really impressive
Obviously that doesn't mean it can look shit, it's still got to be a good looking mog. But anybody can drop a million gold on the BMAH, buy a full set of T3, and look good
It's a lot harder to look good wearing a set that hasn't been posted in this channel 100 times
(also, once again, "Macky Approved" is completely fucking meaningless in any actual sense in game or on this discord, and in no way should be worth striving for)
But that being said, Designers, make it work!

Yeah, as I mentioned above, even though the mog clashed horribly and was frankly horrendous, you were using unique pieces and colors, and it looked better than I'd expect a combination of those pieces to be.
I'm curious to see what you come up with when you spend a bit more time browsing combinations and seeing how stuff works together
Oh, one final tip before I go to bed, never exclude your uncollected appearances from your build
It's always worth it to farm for the perfect piece rather than accepting an inferior substitute.

I think true transmogrification enlightenment lies in not matching the colors of every item. It's incredibly hard to have mismatching colors and still look coherent though.
It's easier to pull it off with more mundane appearances.

- fully custom with color matching

need to get a raiding group all wearing on-point mogs... I haven't confirmed this, but I think that would give at least a 10% DPS boost.
one strategy I like (but don't always use) is to hide all hideable slots, then only add them back if I feel they improve the mog.
of course, sometimes a good belt can make non-matching tops and bottoms work.

Well, a good transmog is subjective. Everyone has their own opinions on what looks good (some are bad at conveying that without insulting) but as long as you like it, you shouldn't bother with what other people think.
On top of that I think underdweller shoulders (from dragon soul) might be good but I'm not 100% sure on how well they'd fit ^^
