#How do you stay motivated to learn?

What I did, and a few others have done too, is to pick some old game and remake it. I chose dragon quest, some choose Mario World, basically any simple game.

That way, you don’t have to flex any creative muscle. Everything has a correct answer. So you can just focus on learning without getting distracted on all of your awesome (and therefore complicated) ideas.

So if your game idea is a survival horror FPS, make Doom or Quake. If it’s a platformer, make a mario. If it’s a deck building roguelite with RPG elements: make Windows Solitaire.

Boil it down to the basics, so you can get comfy with the learning part, and then the foundations you’ll learn (and the “I can do this! I knew I could!”) will make the wheels start turning and get you ready for your game.

It’s also important that I chose Dragon Quest because I LOVE the game and so “I made this menu turn red just like in DQ” was its own reward. So don’t pick BioMiracle Bokkute Uppa as your game to remake, even if it’s closer to your final idea. Choose a favorite old game that you like, it’ll make this awesome.

Because I bounced off of every single “let’s make a basic platformer in Godot” tutorial because who cares about this low-effort basic thing. But when it was something I DEEPLY cared about, it made the boring part of “what does tween mean” inherently interesting.

So what brought you to game design? What about the process intrigued you?
