How about as a form of transport, within the same category as wyverns, owls, ravens, etc. have a magic carpet the player stands on as it zips to its destination. As a bonus, for uniqueness, it could provide a 25% boost to travel times across desert regions over other methods. Likewise the others could receive some unique region specifics to them to spice them up and differentiate them as viable means of transport relevant to the regions they are best suited for, while still being able to be used elsewhere, just without the region bonus. Wyverns could possibly get a mountain crossing bonus, owls-forests, etc. It's nothing necessary, other than adding more depth to the many modes of transportation available.

Hahahaha I actually love that as an idea! It totally would work as well, except making it have different effects probably would be out of scope
I got a couple ideas that would suit my worlds. A flying broom, A steampunk rocket with them sitting on top. A vampire bat carrying them by the shoulder. A flying cloud.
oh yes, a nimbus cloud. Totally forgot about that.
I second EbonyWolf's ideas - they're great. Vampire bats that are mounted regularly would work for me as well. Reminds me of the WoW undead/blood elf flyers being bats.
Ultimately, I would love for these flyers to instead become something you can model. It would also open up for adding flying enemies to the game. Then I could truly create my skeletal drakes that fly about the place. Instead, what you choose between when you place flight points is the nest.
