From vector addition we know that
P+R=Q(vectorially)
Now S= P+ bR (vectorially)
Now R can be again written Q-P (obv vectorially)
So S=P+(b)(Q-P)
= P(1-b) + bQ (obv vectorially again)

S= P+ bR


-> S = P + A (say) now A can be shown by magnitude=b|R| and direction= R i.e. R (cap)=A(cap)
Hence A(vector) can be said to be b(R)(vector)
