Issue: the detail hybrid/piano roll editor behaves a bit strangely for hybrid tracks in some cases
The screen recording is a brief demonstration of some of the below observations

Reproduction protocol:

  1. Create an empty clip on an audio track
  2. Convert the audio track to a hybrid track
  • The editor opens. If in track mode (mine was), it opens in the drum/hybrid editor showing the note grid, with the last lane showing the clip name. If you try to add notes using the mouse, they sound out (if monitoring on), but no notes are added.

A) If You zoom out, notes can be added outside of that audio clip region, which creates a new clip. The hybrid editor now shows two lanes, a single note and the audio lane. Adding a note outside the audio clip but in the audio lane is now possible - it is stored as a C-2 note on the audio lane as well as a new C-2 lane.

B) If you instead of adding a note in the hybrid/drum editor swap to the “piano roll” editor, you can not see the audio lane, but adding notes is possible if you zoom out and add them after the audio clip region (as in A). Adding a single note immediately throws you back into the hybrid editor

Open questions:

  • is the multi-lane track representation as it is useful for single hybrid tracks?
  • should the audio clip be more prominent in that view and the piano roll note area greyed out?
  • should the piano roll editor be available at all if it immediately jumps back to hybrid editor as soon as a note is added?

I’ll try it and see if I get the same results

Got a crash to desktop switching from note editor to audio editor while testing.

Let's not forget that the track gets converted to hybrid but the clips can only be of of one type. Either audio or notes. In my opinion this is not something that can be solved in an elegant way. For once, after converting to hybred track there should be some kind of indicator to distinguish audio from note clips. A little icon on the clip header should do. The autoswitching to drum editor doesn't make any sense to me. Same goes for multilayered editing. Personally I want to decide for myself and the piano roll should be the default and not the other way around, imo.
