When I launch the game, it loads in just fine, but the second it hits the screen that has play on it, my entire computer freezes and steam starts to use 11 gigs of ram, so I assume there is a memory leak somewhere. Anyone know of any fixes here?

PC:

Game build - 22587174
Full PC specs (CPU, GPU, RAM) - Intel I9 - 12900H, 3070 TI Laptop, 16 gb of ram
Operating system - Windows 11
DirectX version (DX11 or DX12) - Neither work (usually use DX11)
Affected peripherals (when necessary) - game frozen fr
Steps to reproduce the issue - open the game, press start, game frozen
What you already tried - changing DX versions, verifying integrity of game files

As far as I know, all the memory leaks are already fixed. Now the game will use about 5-7 GB of RAM, and minimum system requirements state to have at least 8 GB of RAM. If you're only looking at your total system usage for RAM, you'll most likely exceed 11 GB just by playing the game with your windows using a large portion of it, and any other background applications you might be running.
On a clean windows 11 install, you'd be using about 4-5 GB of RAM just with the OS. And if you have any other applications open, it'd be even more.

Here, try deleting these settings files, including Engine.ini in the windows folder below:

Manual Config Deletion

Issue: Audio, video, key bind settings are not working/saving.
Solution: Disable Steam Cloud saves & delete 2 local config files.

With the game closed
  1. In your Steam games list, right click DBH then click Properties.
  2. Toggle off "Keep Game Saves in the Steam Cloud for DBH."
  3. Press Windows Key + E to open File Explorer.
  4. Paste the path below to the address bar.
    %LOCALAPPDATA%\DriveBeyondHorizons\Saved\Config\Windows
  5. Delete GameUserSettings.ini
  6. Paste the path below to the address bar.
    %LOCALAPPDATA%\DriveBeyondHorizons\Saved\SaveGames
  7. Delete UserSettings.sav
  8. Load the game!
  9. If you want to re-enable Steam Cloud saves, do it after playing and exiting the game.

As far as I know, that might be strictly steam issue with the Memory usage, make sure you're not downloading or installing a game, could be part of the memory issue when the Steam client is extracting a game while you have DBH running.
I just booted up to check and see what it's doing on my PC, as far as being on the main menu the Game indicated by the DriveBeyondHorizons process is only using about ~2.5GB of RAM, where as in yoru case it was Steam launcher itself causing the ram spike?

Make sure Steam doesn't have an update or is downloading and installing other games in the background too.

It never was, but I'll check again and make sure

#

I did everything you said including stopping any updates, and it still did the exact same thing

#

I even removed millennium to see if that was the issue and it isn't making a difference

It's steam, but the frozen screen happens well before steam begins to try to crash my PC, so I am still confused where the real problem is here. Since this is the only game this happens with, I just assumed it was the game

Okay, we need more information, and more details on what is happening. Have you tried reinstalling Steam or any other steps?
From what you said and provided it looks like the Steam Client is the one with the memory leak as shown in your screenshot.

Did you try Disabling Steam cloud saves, and going into the %LOCALAPPDATA%\DriveBeyondHorizons\Saved\ directory and deleting all the files from there yet?
You will lose progress, but that should fix if it's related to corrupt save files. There was a Steam Cloud error where it corrupted a lot of user saves not too long ago. And might be affecting the game launching if the Steam client is trying to download the corrupt versions of them.

# rustic oxide Nope, that didnt do anything either. anything else I can try?

Try driver updates, disable any 3rd party antivirus of you have any installed (might be interfering with steam), windows updates, reinstall steam (your has been the go to for steam memory leaks everywhere I read online).

Or might have to run Windows system repair tool to check for corrupt system files (very common in 2026 with all the AI features they forcibly install under the hood).

Good to know! Normally that wouldn't be a common solution, but windows these days can run into more problems than before.
