The biggest issue with pets that causes many people including me to not have them out more often is that they always get stuck somewhere especially when you die, the dragons solve this by being able to fly, but I think all pets should be able to travel in some way to get back to the player
For example, the bug/larvae pets could dig into the ground and pop back up next to the player when really far away or stuck, I'd have it out more often if it could do that instead of me pulling it out again for the 26th time
