although i sympathize with the fact that it may take much longer than perhaps necessary to have policies changed around that, someone on the Go team is in no real position to make any change there, even if they agree with the reasoning

Unfortunately they're likely aware. It's in the hands of their legal team now, which I don't think the Go team has much (if any) say in the matter
You are correct, but again Google's legal team believes that doing so would violate U.S. sanctions, and so we're in the state we're in
