to make in simple, when you dig a hole with the shovel, you could go underground and create an underground shelter. the only problem is that you will have increased chances of finding skeletons/spiders/scorpions, and you may need to also find a way out

You need them to get sand, soil, and to dig up treasure chests.
So yeah, kinda, but not totally useless
