There are some lightweight elevators that only can hold like four people so it's not too out there though a lot of elevators usually have a 1200 - 2000 limit.

that way you can make them tiles with a unique doorway
But by that logic it wouldn't make sense in an actual mall because most malls are usually just two or three floors including the two floor ones. It doesn't have to make a ton of gameplay sense if it actually fits the type of interior. Besides It could still be made to be faster than the stairs.
Speaking of which here are some alternative styles of elevator that I found. The first one is from crossroads Mall.

Considering it's a corner tile I don't think it's meant for shops. Seems more like a connecting piece from one area to the next.

True but there are also just as many places in malls where they don't put shops that are meant to be like transitions, certain hallways, some corners, and sometimes in places like those. So yes and no, it really just depends on the mall and how they decided to compact stores especially from state to state.

I wouldn't want repeating of the main stores but I would totally be into having multiple generic tiles like these just a pad things out maybe?
That way if someone generates the tile with a higher dungeon size it doesn't just make repeats of these main stores that is unless we do want copies idk.

I vote all three: make the staircase, have a variant that instead of having a top it's replaced with a seamless portal to make it infinite, though honestly those can come later and I really just want the foresty moon first (name ideas: crossroad, valley's-view, remembrance, grey field), I do like the forest bit but I think the forest should eventually open into a broken road and a disheveled parking lot with the upper remains of the mall kind of sunken in almost like an underground entrance. Like part of the front door is intact but the very very above ground area is kind of broken and almost slanting and the ground around the door and Mall in general is sinking in slightly as if it's sat for so many years that the foundation is getting pushed down like its own cultural layer.
I don't know why I'm getting this idea but I think it would help sell just how old the mall is.

Could be worse, I've heard some of the higher quality moons get this high if not slightly higher in count. But honestly if your computer can't handle a 223k count then you probably shouldn't be getting interiors that are this big in size anyway. I still can barely run play zone as it is (no shade against Matt it's really amazing).
You could make this a 2d texture with a pho-3d like depth and make part of it transparent like a hair card or make it so that only what's seen in front of the player is actually rendered.
But that level of optimization is probably not worth it.

Basically, when someone pulls the apparatus, there's a chance some of the store shutters will close.
Can't be opened from inside, so you need to communicate with your team before pulling the apparatus
It also would be interesting if there's a chance for them to close (for obvious reasons considerably lower than if you just straight pulled the apparatus) if it gets closer to midnight. It would be especially engaging if there are various doors that lead to employee and maintenance areas that are longer paths than the normal stores but are never blocked by the shutters.
Briefly I did think about these areas preventing monsters from getting in but that would probably be broken.
Not sure how fun it is if that happens and you're inside a shop...

Sorry had to do a few things.
So I had ideas I thought of a little while back when maintenance hallways were mentioned that could be looked at (once the basic tiles are done of course) were variants of the tiles that generate near their related room like softer more furnished and polished hallway tiles when approaching office or management office (all 4 of which maybe could use things from the office "bracken room" and maybe design inspiration from lc_office) and of course rougher more exposed and utilitarian hallways when approaching a custodian or storage room (with inspiration from actual storage rooms from the factory interior), I've thought of this ever since I brought it up and now that it's happening I've thought about it more.
Apologies for the concept vomit, it's the result of 2 weeks of holding on to it.

Well thankfully most of the factory tile assets I think will fit really well for this. Some of it might be a bit brutalist but for sure a lot of the decoration like the pipework should be good. I'm not as sure about the mineshaft assets but there's probably some good things there.

If yes, how would it handle two branches collapsing into each other? The maintenance halls are asymmetrical, which means they can only really go in one direction. Is it possible to make a tile that can be used specifically to connect two branches going in the opposite direction?
and uhh... How does lethal handle displacement textures?
Blender seems to require subdivisioning the mesh in question for them to work, but I doubt thats what people are doing in lethal for the fake depth effect to work
its a built in shader like effect
so dont mess with it in blender
in unity, you dont need to subdivide

I think so, lc_office has a little of that going on. I think if two branches get close they either end in a wall, generate away from one another, or go past each other connecting.
I'm more thinking of making a unique tile where the the directions switch
I don't actually know if that's the case under the hood though, I'm going based off of what I've seen from maps on the ship.

yes we can have a special tile that uses its own sockets to connect 2

if we put the sockets on one end on one of the hall tiles, than have the special tile only have those sockets, then the tile will generate only on the end of one of the halls, and probably connect them.
So like, increasing the chance of straight maintenance tiles, thus leading to a more accurate to reality feel for them
yes there are weights you can customize
in testing i kept them all at 1, which meant everything was at an equal chance. you can go lower to give it a smaller chance as well

Really? I recall seeing most interiors with fake walls in place for doorways that generated but couldn't generate a corresponding hallway

usually it’s a simple cube that fits the doorway

if a path is blocked, the tile that connects to the blocked path (if there is one) will also have a blocker. If we use a plane, the clipping of the two blockers won’t be noticeable.

if we offset the blocker to be lined up with the central part of the hall, it should just create a smooth dead end

You know I was debating in my head about the realism of a mall using pipes instead of Normal air ducts but some HVAC systems do that for older houses sometimes using flexible tubing and plus the aesthetic is growing on me. I can think of logical explanations of what like it's cheaper and easier by taking less space.
Also those textures look godly. They're executed almost perfectly.
