it would be too easy, a minimum reading proficiency of the map should be essential to use mortars
I don't disagree with that statement whatsoever. I do have rebuttals though. One is that mortar placement using the map can be weird and the landing indicator can easily be a few meters off where you clicked even if zoomed in all the way on the map. Idk why this happens but I've used mortars enough to notice it. Mortars are pricy and take up storage space enough(lol mortar crates are still total actual dogshit) that you should be near guaranteed for them to land where you want them. And while it certainly would not be a 1:1 of how it's done RL and some gamification would be taken into account, it does follow a similar path of how observers these days can use binos with rangefinders to target ID.
but I will add I also generally don't use mortars for pve purposes unless it's to help someone do hazardous treasures or TI
