Player instructions and tactics used to be one of the, if not the most important part of the game after the players own raw mechanical skill.
Asking for tactics back might be a stretch as I see that the width and pressure is now controlled centrally by EA and this probably helps them tweak the defensive AI. However, I feel instructions can be brought back into the game. FC IQ was meant to replace instructions and in that way, removed work rates. I would suggest that roles that exist will define the player work rates essentially. That is for instance, box to box on a cm would correspond to high-high or some dynamic work rate system instead of the old school low medium high to fit the various roles in the game. Then there should be player instructions, completely personalised and the roles+ and ++ will be how well the instructions are executed, that is a ++ player in the role will have much better AI positioning/ IQ based on your instructions than a regular player who can play the role.
As it stands there is a severe lack of creativity. I am constantly rotating formations and roles trying to figure out how to make my team flow more fluidly but it just seems punishing to not play the standard roles or the meta defining roles in the particular formation. Pretty sure the community understands what I mean by this as most cms will be B2B ball winning or dlp for eg. This has made the game very limiting. I am currently playing a 433(4) where I have applied a mix of off meta and meta approaches to make my players move a certain way to have more fun. However, the roles are still highly meta. I feel like having instructions revived as a concept and roles being reworked should not take too much effort. It existed once, it can easily come back into the game, especially given that roles essentially are just player instructions, locked away from us. So why not let us make our players play the way we like playing football?
