#Nerf AI defending without making AI “dumb”

There’s nothing more boring, OP, and skill-less than playing against someone who only ever runs around with a midfielder or even an attacker while defending, cutting pass lanes while they let the AI do everything for them. The solution is not to make AI defenders horrible at defending and let players run by them with ease. Instead, just solve the fundamental issue:

Defenses are too compact when at the edge of/inside their own box. AI defenders essentially hold hands and form a wall. CDMs and CMs sit in the lap of the CBs and there’s just no space whatsoever. To solve, just make it so defensive shape in the final third is slightly less compact. Midfielders don’t need to be 20 yards away, and fullbacks don’t need to be hugging the sideline ignoring Inside Forwards, but there should be a natural gap like we saw in older titles.

Spacing is the key to an enjoyable and skill-based game. Defenders should be close enough together for a user to manually switch and keep them near the attacker, but not so close together that they form a wall and require no user input to shut down attacks.
