#Balanced thought on the latest patch and where I think the game needs further adjustment...

My thoughts on patch 1.1.0 . I'll list out the 3 main changes and try to objectively give my opinion. My opinions are based on Ultimate Team, I don't really play anyother game mode.

  1. Sprint Jockey Speed - Clearly needed a buff, you shouldn't be faster with the ball at your feet than someone sprint jockeying. So for me this is a good and needed change. Manual defending should be encouraged.

  2. Jockey and Sprint Jockey Responsiveness - Again similar to my point above, you shouldn't be able to move quicker left and right, up and down quicker with the ball at your feet than a defending player without the ball, so for me good change. Again manual defending should be rewarded.

  3. R1 dribbling nerf (controlled sprint) - Now this one I don't totally hate... In theory, however the execution was a bit off for me. Did R1 dribbling need a nerf before the implementation of the jockey changes, probably not no. However in it's current state, it is not acceptable. The patch notes stated a "Moderate" decrease to the speed, maybe try a "slight" decrease in speed and bring it more inline with the sprint jockey speed. This should keep a level skill gap between dribbling with R1 and manual defending. It also isn't good for the game to practically remove a mechanic and a playstyle that players have.

The changes I think that are needed in the game actually stem from the tactic implications within FUT. In particular the defensive line height adjustments.

If someone wants to play pragmatic and in a low defensive line, that is a viable way to play, however there needs to be risk reward to every play style. At the moment the low defensive line and counter attacks are obviously a little out of whack. Simple fix would be that if you have defensive height less than "50" for example, your transitions from defensive-attack should be "Moderately Slower". meaning you can play pragmatic and defensive, but if you win the ball back, your players will be slow at getting out, reducing the feeling that counter attacks are super strong. In addition to this, the "extreme" defensive height stipulates "Uses a bit more stamina" the "Deep" defensive approach should use a lot more stamina, it's the only way to balance this play style. IRL a team will require an extremely high level of concentration to play this way and since this can't be measured in a video game, i believe this will provide a good balance adjustment. Ultimately If you want to play deep, your players shouldn't just sprint forward at the speed of light to counter on a transition. There has to be balance.

I also think balanced, high and extreme defensive approaches could do with a slight adjustment to the overall defensive line height, there are times I play on "High" and my team still sometimes sit back far too deep. But I haven't tested this too much in the most recent patch.

A further thought on Technical/Jockey balance -
What if you matched the speed of Technical and jockey for example a player with Technical+ would move the same speed with the ball as a defender with Jockey+, a player with regular technical moves at the same speed with the ball as a defender with jockey regular play style and then players without the play styles again move at the same speed when controlled sprinting and jockeying. This seems like a really good way to balance this. Then it would come down to tracking the movement correctly and if you go the wrong way the attacking player would create space and the defending player has a level of “risk vs reward”

I’ve also read a lot of disgruntled players talking about AI defending. Which has been an issue for a long time. But granted, extremely hard to balance given you can only control 1 player on the pitch at a time, both defensively and attacking.

Considerations to adjust and balance AI defending -

  1. Make non player controlled players slower. Require the user to control the defender.
  2. Auto tackles really shouldn’t be a thing, auto interceptions also shouldn’t really be a thing. Different to if you run into a defender (That’s user error) same with passes, if a pass goes to the defending player then of course they should get the ball as that would be considered a loose ball and therefore should trigger the player switch.
  3. Players are reporting a lot of issues of opposition running back with CDM and letting the AI back line defend for them, this obviously shouldn’t be a viable play style and this needs adjustment. I do think that adjustments to controlled sprint could seriously see this play style be very unrewarding, you should be able to glide past an AI opponent if the user isn’t controlling their defence. But an adjustment to the 2 things listed above could also see a big change to this issue too.

Ultimately drastic wholesale changes are not what this game needs, slight adjustments please. This is one of the best FIFA/FC games we have had in years and it has a lot of potential.

Well said. Also the point about nerfing a mechanic to the ground that is a playstyle and technically something you „pay“ for in a card

Great work EA listening to the community and not just the sweats.

This is a step in the right direction. Good update. But EA please fix fidget spinners next.

However the fidget sppining is still way too op and unrealistic. Defending against that is still impossible as defending has been nerfed to the ground.

The next step is finding a way to nerf the fidget spinners so that defenders have a fair and equal opportunity.

The dribbling is still op responsive and the jockey is unable to keep up.
In this current state only streamers and sweats keep abusing the left stick mechanic and nobody else is interested to play.
