The reason that cm formations aren’t working is because the center mids are preoccupied with marking the midfield rather than dealing with attackers. For example, in a 442 vs 4231, if the 442 attacks, the two strikers plus the four midfielders will come forward, marked by the cdms and the defenders. This creates a 6 V 6 on one end. Now let’s say the 442 team loses the ball and is countered. Now you have the 4 attackers from the 4231 opponent rushing against the 4 defenders left behind. To anyone that understands football and space, a 4 v 4 is far far preferable to a 6 v 6, way more space, especially with how gameplay is. The center mids of the 442 remain preoccupied with the opponent cdms, resulting in a huge gap left behind them. This could all be resolved by having the midfielders in the 442 sacrifice stamina by tracking back and favoring the defense of the attackers. Yes, center mids have to run the length of the pitch the whole game, but if you have two engines, the 442 should be a very defensive shape that offers a great structure with 8!!!!! Defenders not 4
