In FC 26 the AI defensive positioning is horrible. My opponents can just run straight into the box because my AI defenders don't track their runners, they either back off or move out of the way completely. This leaves wide open lanes and basically gives my opponent a free goal almost every time. It feels like I'm being punished for not manually controlling every single defender.

As it should happen, you should be punished by making defensive mistakes, thank GOD it's the best change they made in YEARS, there's a reason people find EA FC 26 the best game of the franchise in SEVERAL years, and that's only because the more manually defensive focused gameplay. You just want the AI to bail you out so you can win against better players than you. They buffed defensive AI every year, and MAJORITY of community HATED IT, so you had your time to learn defending, now let us have fun for once, do you ?

The defending has been nerfed to the ground. Please make defending equally powerful compared to attackers.
Game has just become an unrealistic goal fest for skill and pace abusers as defending has been severely nerfed

I didn't mean that I wanted the AI to defend for me, I meant that when I'm not controlling my CB's and I'm controlling one of my midfielders the AI CB's just run out of position leaving open space where if my opponent gets through it's a free goal for him.
It's one of the main reasons why most games end up being high scoring games.

Solution: Just select your CB and don't let the AI do it for you.
Just because you want to run back with your CDM meanwhile your defenders face up the attacker and do the defense work for you doesn't mean everybody wants that
Besides it's the opposite at what your stating here. The gameplay currently is so AI based that nobody selects any defender, luckily their fullbacks, but talking about CB's, NEVER. It's so boring to see people running to the box with their CDM and ST and letting the AI defend for them, because it does, the AI does everything and it's just plain boring.

It shouldn't be that the only way your CB's hold their position is by controlling them manually, I'm not talking about that the AI CB's should hold up the attackers but rather hold their defensive position and not leave wide open gaps while I'm pressing the ball controlling someone else, if that makes sense

I get you in some sort of way. But only hold the position, not intercept, not getting the ball back, not tackling, just holding otherwise its completely unfair.

If you are seeing that they open too much, id guess it's because you press too much R1 to do 2nd man pressing, they will get out of position if you do this. Still, R1 is so dumb overpowered but Idk, I lost interest in the game bc of this
