If my choices of acquiring an item are a random loot drop or earning it, those are two different ways of being rewarded for playing the game. Neither one is a penalty

To me it sounds like the issue is you focusing on min maxing in a casual pve game that offers a lot of variety and builds other than just "I'll just use whatever is the strongest right now"

But to me the backlog is just "Hey if you also do this you can get bonus stuff"
yeah the melee one looks like it sucks cause melee sucks in the game rn, not enough upgraes to make it worth it but i have seen nothing saying that there will be a super rare exotic exclusive to the backlogs (furthermore exotics are the one upgrade type that are not rng based, with time you are going to get every single exo [bar the amalgamation ones those are weird])

No I am not, what I am saying though is that not everything that doesn't wipe a group in one shot is useless or even bad
This is an issue in multiple other games as well, metas form and everything else is considered garbage
Maybe the amounts can be adjusted, but the main thing I am arguing against is considering it a penalty to make people use X or Y thing to complete a challenge as if it's even remotely impossible or that difficult to do
Assuming melee is the same as it is on live, why would I need to when I know how meleeing is like from the live branch?

I'll do it for the sake of doing it, if there's a challenge I enjoy completing them for the sake of completing them even if the reward is not amazing
Do I need to "enjoy" them? I just press one button when an enemy is in my face like I have already done before this
I've been meleeing enemies since I started playing and not used any melee upgrades, I don't see how being a newbie makes a difference here

So, I don't see the backlog as a bad thing but, I see the rewards as a bit small for how much could be required of the task.
Also it would be nice to be able to go back and do other tasks rather than have them locked out. Maybe even have a rewards for those who decide to 100% it or something.
Other than that I think it's fine for the most part. Everyone has the capability of doing it and it gives people a reason to play outside of comfort characters/weapons.
I can see that. However, even as level 53 I don't think the rewards match the effort from what I have seen so far.
Whether I am a newbie or a veteran, killing a certain amount of enemies with a trident for just "xp" seems a bit too small of a reward for my taste.
At the same time, I don't think nodes should be locked out and weshould be able to revisit previous ones that we didn't complete.
Inherently, I don't think the backlog is a bad thing because it's just "play differently and get rewards."
However, the amount/reward types can be questionable for what's asked of us.
If I were to think of this from the newbie perspective, it just seems like a way for getting them into the game and understanding/trying different things but getting rewarded for it.
From that perspective, it also isn't giving a new player much because you aren't get as much from it that could help you. You would honestly get more from side objectives or a kill objective while waiting for the drop pod.
Especially the kill objective bonus.
