You don't get upgrades for your gear that quickly, and with how big the grid is by default, I haven't had to actually think about how to fit the few upgrades I've found together yet.
Constricting the grid size initially would make players give more thought to which upgrades they use and gives a much greater incentive to level up a weapon so you can just barely fit that last piece of your build in.
