Because we cannot look into the backend code before it is being pushed, I recommend advising users against using that one.

The developer can send anything as an update to everyone and people cannot choose to not accept it. They will have no oversight on what is send either. Steam will try to force a user to update before running the program and usually that is how people know of a patch being released. Because of Steam's systems, people are unable to glance at the code before it is pushed out to people, and consequentially run. Steam is a trusted platform, so nobody expects it to contain a virus or other suspicious code.
To release a project on Steam, you need to pay an entry fee of 100 dollar. Steam has a huge market. Any open source project ending up on Steam, not as an open sourced fork is as such both suspicious and a huge risk.
