The lead ship of the Independence-class light aircraft carriers. Originally constructed from a Cleveland-class light cruiser, she was converted to an aircraft carrier as the Pacific War saw a s shift from battleships to aircraft carriers. She participated in the Gilbert Islands campaign before being torpedoed. After her retrofit and her doctrine being changed to night battles, her planes greatly assisted in the Battle of Leyte Gulf and Okinawa, where she helped sank the Japanese battleship Musashi.
