For me Showgirl is a no skip album, like from an artistic lense, I see the vision. Also Taylor being happy is like it's been way too long. Like she got up from the table!

It could have been him getting the gf made her realize... oh my own feelings may be deeper, but I don't want to ruin things (the friendship or even the relationship he had) The thing is. Could have been first love or could have been a crush, but due to the chance not being taken... It is a what if that will never get answered, and never was.
So moving forward it is better to take the chance. Like I also feel she was working on the debut re-recording process or something else happened that brought up highschool memories.
