Dear Xbox team,
I’ve been a passionate Xbox user for over a decade, yet one issue remains unclear: which practices are allowed—especially around region-specific keys and third-party accounts via Home Console?
Most players don’t know the legal limits. The Terms of Service are lengthy and hard to navigate, and there are no clear warnings at the moments when critical decisions are made. Yet violations can lead to revoked licenses or suspended accounts without proper, contextual notice.
Here’s an analogy:
Imagine a kiosk (reseller) selling non-alcoholic cocktails (official keys), alcoholic ones (foreign keys), and illicit drugs (sold accounts). The police (Microsoft) focus on the cocktails: if an alcoholic drink is caught, the child (player) loses both the drink and access to the kiosk. Meanwhile, the vendor keeps operating in plain sight—full signage, discounts and all. To the customer it looks legal. Yet only buyers face consequences, not sellers.
The solution could be surprisingly simple and cost-effective: three clear warnings, placed exactly where most mistakes happen:
-
When redeeming a key:
“WARNING: Only redeem official Microsoft keys. Unauthorized codes may be revoked and accounts restricted.” -
When signing into a new account on a console:
“Is this account created by you or someone you know? Using third-party accounts violates Microsoft’s Terms of Service.” -
When assigning a home console:
“Reminder: This feature may not be used to share licenses across unrelated accounts. Violations can result in revoked access.”
These pop-ups cost virtually nothing and would help millions of honest users make the right choices—and prevent accidental policy breaches. I will share this message publicly and submit it as a formal ticket in the Xbox Feedback Hub so others can track its progress.
Thank you for your attention
