I have a audio technica headphones with a mod mic and when plugged into an xbox controller the sound quality is terrible and cuts out all the time as if the cable is breaking. I have tried a new splitter cable for mic and headphones which improved the quality slightly but still happens, tried a new controller which did nothing and tried plugging headset into the controller directly and nothing. I tried plugging my headset into my phone with a usb-c adapter and it suddenly worked fine.

If you connect these headphones to a computer or mobile phone via the mini jack, how do they sound?
I'm no expert on headphones, but I think some audio devices require a certain amount of amplification, which a mobile phone can configure and provide, but not a battery-powered game controller.
I would also try connecting other headphones to that controller.
Worked fine before and works fine on phone and skullcandies cut out too.
