#USB-Splitters don‘t work with mice or keyboards

Since the middle of last year, I have been using the USB ports of my Xbox with an external Seagate hard drive, a direct cable to my controller, and a USB splitter (USB hub) to which a wired mouse and a wired keyboard are connected. Since the update on January 5, 2024, neither the mouse nor the keyboard are recognized by the Xbox when connected via the USB splitter. However, when I connect them directly to the USB ports of the Xbox, both work without any issues. This is particularly problematic because, with this setup, I am limited to only 2 USB ports for input devices due to the external hard drive which obviously needs to be connected constantly.

If your issue is related to an Enforcement action, no one here can help.

To help us help you, make sure to answer:

  • What did you try to do and what happened? (Be specific—mention your Xbox model, PC version, Insider ring, or anything relevant.)
  • **What have you tried to do to fix it already? **(List everything you’ve done to fix it.)
  • Have you searched the error code or for similar problems? (Tell us what you found.)

If you don’t answer these, you might not get a response.

A splitter and a hub are two different things. Functional splitters don’t really exist anymore and shouldn’t be bought.

USB hubs are the main device you can find at stores. They work fine with Xbox. It is preferable to use a powered USB hub, especially if your keyboard has RGB or you have storage devices plugged in to it.

For my main setup, I use the Xbox Series X, the Scuf Instinct Pro Controller, the Xpert M900 gaming mouse, the Ducky One 3 Cosmic blue TKL-layout gaming keyboard, and a 7-in-1 USB 3.0 hub with an integrated USB-C to USB 3.0 (USB-A) adapter. I have tried 4 alternative USB splitters, 2 alternative keyboards, and 2 alternative mice. There are almost no answers available online about this issue, and if there are, they are usually based on the fact that a game does not recognize an input device. Until the update on January 5, 2024, this setup worked flawlessly.

Sorry, I was gathering all the informations while you already answered this quickly 😅

Well… the main Problem is, that it worked just fine until the update.

I am skeptical that a USB hub will solve the problem, as both devices are supplied with enough power through the splitter but are not recognized as input devices by the system.

Have you tested the hub/adapter is still working?

Yes, I have already tested all the splitters with a laptop, and the controller is also recognized when I connect it through that on both ends - xbox and laptop.

I am using usb-splitters and no hub with an external power supply.

I am sorry, nvm my last msg - I didn’t fully understand your 1st message till now

#

So what i actually mean is that my USB Hubs don’t use an external power supply but it anyway should be fine, as it was until 5th January.

And tested the adapter? Because you said you’re going from type-c to type-a.

Yes, all of the devices work just fine

Weird. I haven’t heard anything that would cause the USB hub to stop working. Maybe the USB isn’t giving enough power. Try only the mouse connected to the hub.

Greetings. Is it failing since a 2024 or 2025 update?

I'm testing Xbox Series X but with insider software, testing with a front port.
Game to test: Minecraft
8K KVM with HDMI and USB 3.0 without external power: No problems.
Generic 8-port USB 3.0 hub with extra power cable but not using it: No problems.
I have an SSD connected behind it as well, although it shouldn't affect it.
Previously I've also been using an old KVM with only USB ports to switch between PC and console, I've also had no problems.

Also keep in mind that although it's rare, maybe by using an intermediate adapter it might detect them as a possible attempt to use an unofficial controller and block it, as I don't have unofficial controllers I don't know exactly what would happen. We must bear in mind that some hubs may have their own characteristics that make them not be recognized as a generic hub.

You can also try using the web browser as well as Minecraft in case that's the game you're using that's giving you problems.
Remember that you can also use the keyboard to navigate through the console's menus to test this outside of a game.
I would also try disconnecting the hard drive and trying one of the rear ports by trying to connect the peripherals one by one to the hub.
If you have a friend with an Xbox console, it would be interesting to try your peripherals there as well.

Hey everyone,

I’ve spent some time testing what could be causing the issue. I’ve used several programs to observe the functionality: Xbox Home, Minecraft, and Microsoft Edge just like you suggested (thanks btw) . Here are the results:

First, I disconnected the Seagate hard drive to free up all three USB ports on the console.

• Connected the keyboard, mouse, and controller directly to the Xbox (no issues).

• Connected the keyboard, mouse, and controller via the hub (only the controller is recognized).

• Connected the controller directly to the Xbox and the mouse + keyboard via the hub (controller works fine, but the mouse and keyboard are not recognized).

• Connected the keyboard directly to the Xbox and the mouse + controller via the hub (controller and keyboard are recognized, but the mouse is not).

• Connected the mouse directly to the Xbox and the keyboard + controller via the hub (controller and mouse are recognized, but the keyboard is not).

• Connected the controller directly to the Xbox and the mouse + keyboard via the hub (controller is recognized, but the mouse and keyboard are not).

• Connected the mouse and keyboard directly to the Xbox and the controller via the hub (everything works fine, but this setup prevents me from connecting the Seagate hard drive directly to the Xbox).

I repeated this entire process with two other USB hubs, but the results were always the same.

Today, I went to a friend’s place, who also owns an Xbox Series X, and tested my devices on his console to see if they would behave differently. I couldn’t reproduce any of the issues I experience with my Xbox—in fact, the hub worked perfectly.

I then compared his Xbox settings with mine, and aside from the online safety and privacy settings (specifically regarding the “show as online” options), they are identical.

Does anyone have any idea what else could be causing this issue?

That’s great you tested on another Xbox.
Something might have happened to your USB power. Because it’s able to detect some devices but not all, almost like the 3rd device isn’t powered all the way or something.

Yeah that‘s what I thought too, but in this case it wouldn‘t be able to support the Seagate hard drive because it needs way more power then any mouse or Keyboard right?
