#New friends vs following

Hey all! I’m new in here, however have been an Xbox user for what’s about to hit a year.

I have a question in regards to the new following versus friends on the series X. I’ve been looking all over the place and couldn’t find an exact answer or even recent ones, so I am hoping someone here can explain it.

Had a friend who never added me. (We still gamed together) But I still had them as a favorite/followed them. Yesterday I noticed that they were off my friends list and only on a following tab and the favorite status was gone.

Am I still able to see when they get online so I know when we can play a game? Or am I only able to see recently played games?

Yes when you click on a person you follow you can see if they are online or not

that link shows what followers can see.
followers aren't friends.
friends see more than followers.

Ideally though if you're friends, you'd add then and they accept!
