#How to Disable Pre-Download Game Updates
1 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
@dark pebble Thanks for posting! Please remember, support here is volunteer-based and not official. Be patient after posting, and don’t spam or ask in other channels.
If your issue is about accounts, billing, contact Xbox Support directly.
If your issue is related to an Enforcement action, no one here can help.
To help us help you, make sure to answer:
- What did you try to do and what happened? (Be specific—mention your Xbox model, PC version, Insider ring, or anything relevant.)
- **What have you tried to do to fix it already? **(List everything you’ve done to fix it.)
- Have you searched the error code or for similar problems? (Tell us what you found.)
If you don’t answer these, you might not get a response.
I’m serious why you’d want to delay the update
Because I don't want a pre-update taking up 100 GB of space before it's actually needed.
Updates do not take up 100GB of space in your console
Doesn’t affect the base game size by much unless it’s a new dlc etc and even then, games are usually optimised to not be impacted that much (sometimes even reducing the size)
Pre-downloaded updates apparently do.
The Diablo IV pre-downloaded update is sitting there, and is about ~100 GB. My available SDD space is ~100 GB less then before my Xbox Series X pre-downloaded this update.
that makes sense, since the update can't be activated until the day it is officially ready.
i'm not sitting at my xbox right now but is there no option to control that under the normal update settings in the 'my games' view?
That is surprising, it doesn’t seem that useful if that is the case.
Correct. I expect once the patch officially "launches," it'll install and the space will free up, minus any new content increasing the size of the game, of course.
For options, not that I can see. My expectation is the only way to stop this would be to disable all automatic updates (uncheck keeping games and apps up to date), which I don't want to do.
If you happen to find anything, please let me know!
Yeah. I'm 100% down to pre-install new games and such, since the space it's taking is the space it'll take anyway. But to simply download a large patch and have it sit there for days until it's permitted to actually execute is something that I can see being problematic.
FYI, it almost never should be days, 1-2 days max (Diablo 4 goes live this morning)
That's good to know. Still though, not a fan of a patch sitting around for any length of time taking up space. Especially not that much space.
just because an update might be 100GB that does not mean its going too take 100gb in space that isnt how updates work
some updates can be reinstalls and some will also override existing files.
Pre-downloaded patch installs on most platforms do work that way. But that’s beyond the scope of the tech support thread which was “can I turn it off”
but there main reason for asking that question is due too size of updates and also how much space they take. So yes its very much in scope of the question
simply put they dont take that much space
Since the answer to the original question is no, the best answer followup would be to file feedback about it
The update pre-downloaded onto my Xbox Series X this Saturday, and is currently taking up 100 GB of SSD space. When the patch actually "launches" (I assume when I get home and fire up my console today), then that will change since the patch is actually being applied.
What's the best way to file feedback?
!feedback
To report an issue on your Xbox console, make sure you have the Xbox Report a Problem app installed. If you don't have it installed, download it from the store. After it's installed, press and hold the Xbox button on your controller and then select Report A Problem. Please provide as much detail as possible in your report.
More detailed information about reporting issues can be found here: https://support.xbox.com/help/account-profile/manage-account/xbox-insider-hub-report-a-problem
Hmmm... not keen to have an insider App installed on my console, so I'll pass.
It doesn't enroll you into the insider program. It just allows you to submit feedback
That's fine.
Gone are the days of being able to email feedback. Or call Support and speak to a human. Sigh.
Support never has been a line to the devs for feedback
