#Is native 1080p better than upscaled 1440p?

Hello, I have two options to play. Full HD Philips TV (a bit older but has great picture quality) and a new Samsung Odyssey G5 monitor that has 1440p resolution and also supports 4K signal with downscaling to 1440p (2K).

What I'm curious about is what would give me the best experience to play with Xbox One S?

In Xbox TV Guide to setup picture it says to put highest resolution that my display supports. I first set to 4K and played a bit like that but I was left with a feeling that picture looks a bit muddy, once I changed to 1440p I instantly noticed picture becoming a lot sharper. I guess that is because when I set it to 4K the console upscales it to 4K while at the same time my monitor downscales it to 1440p and something is lost in the process. Am I right?

Also, in general, I feel like my picture on monitor is muddier than it was when I was playing on 1080p TV. Even when upscaled to 1440p. Does that make sense or I am imagining things in my head?

So my question is could it be true that upscaled to 4K then downscaled to 1440p looks worse than just upscaled to 1440p (native resolution of my monitor) and that native 1080p on my TV looks better than upscaled 1440p on my monitor?

I'm also thinking about getting Xbox Series S to get most of my monitor but I was a bit disappointed to see that most games still run in 1080p also and upscale to 1440p or 4K so I wonder if there's much point in getting it compared to Xbox One S since it's still the same resolution. But I will probably get it in a month or two anyways. I'm just curious what settings and setup should I use 'til then.

Thanks.

One s cannot play at 4k. It could only play movies/tv at 4k

Series s has better upscaling compared to one s. It can also boost fps in several xb1 era games. Plus play all new games that will be only on series consoles

That I am aware. I'm asking about upscaled 4K.

The answer to this is going to depend wholly on your display's downscaler - but your instinct is probably good anyway. Upscaling and downscaling are lossy processes so doing it twice is usually going to be worse than doing it once.

Thanks for the answer. And what about upscaled 1440p vs. native 1080p? Is upscaled 1440p still better than native 1080p on native 1080p screen? 🙂

The native resolution will always look best unless you find the lossy image more pleasing for some reason.
