#help with Cross platform

My friend is considering buying a game and it’s not cross platform (Elden ring)
I want to play it with him and I have it on Xbox.
He says if he gets it on the Microsoft store he can install it in his PC as you can install some Xbox games this way.
My concern is that if he does this we won’t be able to play together?
Will he be able to install the game he got the the Microsoft store on the PC and on his Xbox?
His model is Xbox series S
I have and Xbox series X

Elden Ring is not a Play Anywhere title. If he buys it on Xbox it can only be installed and played on an Xbox.
