I’m trying to pair my console to my phone

I recently got an Xbox s from a friend and it won’t let me pair it to my phone. I’m signed into my account on my phone and I have remote play set up on my console but I’m not sure where to go from there. If I wanted to pair a new console I’d have to put in a code that isn’t popping up. And if I wanted to pair an existing console it just says to turn on my Xbox and sign in while it’s already on and signed in. Someone help please
