playing a backwards compatible game and it just won't let me connect to xbox live and i don't know why, i can't believe a multibillion dollar company could screw up this badly over a console

Xbox 360 live services are old and most likely running on overall older systems, such is not easy to maintain to a 100% especially when it's a 3 generation old service. If issues arise usually it could work later that day or if you keep trying for example, but there is also tons of other steps you can try that are on google for example

there will always be some people having it not dependent on their connection, but sometimes there is waves where more people seem to have issues

Yeah it is like completely random, but some stuff can impact it like recurring billing
