Xbox Series X sounds like it turns back on after full shutdown.

Hello there everyone I just wanted to ask if this is by design in the Xbox Series X. Whenever I turn off the Xbox(I have the full shutdown option on) after about two or three minutes I hear what I think is the optical drive on. Nothing else turns on not the fan nor even the Xbox logo on the console. The only thing that does turn on for a little bit are my keyboard and mouse. Then it turns off is this by design?

Yes, this can happen by design. When set to full shutdown, if you have checked either "Keep my console up to date" or "keep my games and apps up to date", the console will turn itself "on" into a standby mode periodically to check and download updates, then shut back down into a full shutdown mode.

Even without either of those checked, the console will do a very small boot to make sure the wireless radio that the controllers connect to is powered up and listening for controllers before shutting back down, so you can turn on the console with a controller. That radio and another small part that watches for the power button to be pressed are the only things that are powered in a "full shutdown" scenario. To make sure they're configured correctly, the console has to do a reboot into that mode though if you're coming from on, which is why you can sometimes hear the disc spin up and see your USB keyboard light up very briefly.

Gotcha yeah that makes more sense to me now. I also can recall that if there isn’t a disc in the optical drive I don’t think I hear it do it or maybe just not as loud.

Either way I am glad it’s by design. :)

Yep, with no disc in the drive, there's nothing to spin, so you won't really hear it 🙂
