Gamertag taken by an account that has been inactive for years.

I want to change my gamertag but there is this one account that has been inactive for many years that just so happened to have the name I want. Since they are inactive, can I somehow get them to change it?

No, you can't claim the tag.

There are many different ways that an account may still be active, not just on Xbox. But even if they are inactive, that is their tag. You can't take that from them.
