Need help! - Xbox one S reset itself to factory settings

My partner turned on his Xbox just now and it’s completely wiped to the factory settings. No background, all the settings removed, no achievements etc. He didn’t reset it or anything, was playing normally 2 hours before and turned it off like normal. It’s not a new Xbox or anything. Nothing unusual happened leading up to this.

Is his stuff permanently gone? Can he get it back? This has really upset him, he’s put years into this account, we play everyday together.

He’s currently trying to fix it and hasn’t checked the games yet. I will do an edit update if his games are wiped too (really really hoping they aren’t). He just checked his location and it’s been set to the US (he’s UK) but he got no alerts from 2FA about someone trying to log in.

I’m asking as he doesn’t have Reddit.

Is he an insider? Update could have reset the Xbox.

But yes, can get games back. Just sign in and reinstall them. They probably still install, just needs to be signed in.

so achievements do not get reset so this isnt a factory reset from the sounds of things there account as just been removed from the xbox and you just need to add it back this would also explain the other things you mentioned like the background etc

If the console as been reset fully then nothing as gone its just removed from the console. Signing back in with resync all settings everything. And you can just install your games back from my games and apps, So nothing is lost regardless.
