Does it do it if you plug in the hard drive into one of the rear USB ports?

np. The back ports are better for the hard drives as they're on a separate channel that can better support them. The front USB port is shared with the wireless radio, which if your hard drive us powered via USB and was pulling all the power from that USB chain, it may have been knocking the wireless radio the controller connects to offline 🙂
