It could be that the cable your using is only a charge cable and not a data cable.

Best way to test would be too plug your phone into your PC with the cable and see if you can transfer files

If the controller isn't connecting too your PC with a USB cable the likely cause is that the cable isnt a data cable so get a cable that is designed to be used for that
