This is all a service side issue, it will be random based on which server your ISP routes you to.

There is no requirement or need for XBOX Live to be operational for me to use my seperate Hulu subscription, using Hulu's app, fetching content from Hulu's CDNs/partners.

I updated my console, and all apps, last night. It was fine. working perfectly fine. Today, you at MS have a service outage. That's fine, computers cry too.

HOWEVER
Have we never heard of a pass statement? If connection unavailable, retry in x time? I understand why things are how they are, but I'm just hoping to spotlight that in the event of times like today, it's the honkiest structure to have. I understand it's not your fault directly, but also understand that today, I couldn't use the XBOX I paid for in cash, to watch my correctly paid Hulu Subscription, thru my already-up-to-date Hulu app, on my 100% connected internet connection, because Microsoft was having a problem. How is that a fair way for my device to function as a consumer? I'm more than happy to yknow, agree to disagree on certain things but this makes no sense.

A service error was telling your console it was out of date and it needed a mandatory system update. Period. That prevents you from using anything online, by design. As I said, ANY online device that requires you be kept up to date, would behave the same way. This is one specific service that had an error that caused this problem. If any other services had problems, that would not have caused this issue, and you would have been able to use Hulu.

Consoles require you always be up to date on the latest update, period. PS5 does this, Switch does this.

Yes, I'm saying this isn't an error-universal behavior. There are hundreds of services that make up "Xbox Live", this is a couple of them. These are the only ones that can cause THIS error.

For the record, I'm still going to gripe to high heavens about even that error's specific functionality, but considering it's exclusive to that error according to you it's understandable. I just...call me dramatic all you want but, when you guys made XBOX more than a gaming console, that's what people started using it for. People use XBOX's to do more than just queue up with friends - they get the news, weather, etc. Here I am trying to crank up my local weather to find out if that is or isn't a tornado, and I gotta update my XBOX, but I don't, it's just broken. I know that of course, the XBOX is not designed or warrantied for emergency usage and is not guarenteed or designed to deliver emergency warnings, however, it is very concerning to perform the action I typically would to seek safety information and for it to have been buggered by a rogue software update. I hope you can understand my issue.

Also consider that the hardware needed to receive/record OTA signals is either very complex, or paygated by ISP's to get you on a bundle. You could say "local channels are OTA" but, that's assuming someone's got a coil or digital rabbit ears around.

I understand the concept of a "required update" very much. But in this instance, the error was falsely flagged to begin with - it didn't actually have an update. In my scenario, which I know is 100% unique more than likely, I would have preferred an option to go commando without live and attempt a connection, but i understand how XBOX's services are built and I know it's more complicated than that.
