to my knowledge it still counts as a paid game so yes you would need a subscription that includes gold or is gold only to play. The previous time it worked you either was sharing with someone who had it or it was warzone

There is 4 different subscriptions, xbox live gold is the one needed to play online in games that cost money, but gamepass ultimate includes gold in it's package

actually looking more into it, it doesn't have the tag it requires gold on the store page, might have been changed since previous game trials. Or it's a bug, but you tried restarting your console fully and also pressing B when the prompt comes up?
